The History of MOTA

The Minnesota Occupational Therapy Association (MOTA) was established in 1922 at Glen Lake Sanatorium with a membership of ten to fifteen occupational therapists.  Its purpose then, as well as today, was to promote practice, education and research within the profession of occupational therapy.  Initially, MOTA was instrumental in the development of the occupational therapy curriculum at the University of Minnesota.  Since then the involvement and scope of interest has grown tremendously.  Today, the issues which concern the membership include reimbursement of occupational therapy services, legislation, credentialing, research and continuing education. 

MOTA serves as a liaison between therapists in Minnesota and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).  The relationship is maintained primarily in two ways: 1) through Representatives elected by the AOTA membership within Minnesota and 2) through MOTA's President's participation in the Committee of Affiliated State Association Presidents (ASAP).  In addition, MOTA represents the profession of occupational therapy with other professions, medical facilities and social, industrial and govenmental agencies in Minnesota.
