Course Description: 

Understanding and addressing sensory processing disorder in the school environment can be an effective way to improve a child’s school success.  This course will focus on creating and implementing individualized student plans, focusing on efficient scheduling of sensory breaks, environment considerations, and strategies to use in and out of the classroom.  A roundtable discussion will include ways to track your student’s progress and approaches to educating the special education team on OT and sensory processing.

Speaker Bio:
Heather Schmidt, MS, OTR/L is an Occupational Therapist, and Founder of Integrative Therapy, a company that provides Occupational Therapy services to charter schools in the Twin Cities Metro area.  Heather’s experience includes treating all ages and a variety of disabilities in the medical community as an outpatient pediatric therapist and as a school therapist in kindergarten through high school settings.  Since graduating from the University of Minnesota in 2003, she has completed many additional trainings to address sensory processing disorder, functional vision, reflex integration, and social skill development. Heather has given numerous staff in-services at the schools that Integrative Therapy serves, educating on sensory processing disorder and incorporating movement into the classroom.  She volunteers at Camp Avanti as a staff therapist and volunteer coordinator, and is a guest lecturer and Community Advisory Board member for Herzing University.

 

Learning Objectives:

1. To identify when and how to use sensory based strategies in the school environment.
2. Demonstrate how to effectively track a student’s progress.
3. Develop resources to create fun and interactive staff trainings.
