COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment against severe and sometimes treatment resistant mood and psychotic illnesses, but is often misunderstood, stigmatized, and underutilized.  Join us to learn what this procedure actually entails, who may be an appropriate candidate, how your clients may benefit, and how to speak with clients and their families about this procedure.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants can expect to:

  • Identify basic indications for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and factors which may contribute to underutilization of ECT
  • Comprehend risks versus benefits of ECT
  • Delineate client factors which play a role in selection for, or exclusion from, ECT
  • Gain a basic understanding of the ECT procedure
  • Articulate ways in which ECT may improve clients’ abilities to engage in meaningful occupations
  • Gain information about client resources and community education regarding ECT
