Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment against severe and sometimes treatment resistant mood and psychotic illnesses, but is often misunderstood, stigmatized, and underutilized.  Join us to learn what this procedure actually entails, who may be an appropriate candidate, how your clients may benefit, and how to speak with clients and their families about this procedure.

Participants can expect to:

  • Identify basic indications for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and factors which may contribute to underutilization of ECT
  • Comprehend risks versus benefits of ECT
  • Delineate client factors which play a role in selection for, or exclusion from, ECT
  • Gain a basic understanding of the ECT procedure
  • Articulate ways in which ECT may improve clients’ abilities to engage in meaningful occupations
  • Gain information about client resources and community education regarding ECT

Prior to assuming his position as Medical Director of Minnesota’s Anoka Metro Regions Treatment Center, Dr. Puneet Narang served as the lead psychiatrist for Regions Hospital’s electroconvulsive therapy service, as an inpatient psychiatrist and physician advisor in Regions Hospital’s emergency department and inpatient mental health units, and as the lead psychiatrist for Regions Hospital’s partial hospitalization program, DayBridge.  Dr. Narang has authored multiple articles and book chapters addressing the topic of electroconvulsive therapy, and has provided frequent in-services for Regions’ staff to facilitate improved understanding of ECT.  He is a skilled educator, is passionate about the benefits of ECT, and is a strong advocate for occupational therapy in mental health.
