NICU SIG - The treatment of birth brachial plexopathy: From birth to outpatient

Event Description
This course will include: assessment and treatment of birth brachial plexus injuries from acute injury in the birthplace or NICU, to the transition into outpatient therapies.  Discussion around referrals, assessment and home programming recommendations for families will occur as well.

Speaker Biographies
Alex Wuornos, OTD, OTR/L is a developmental and feeding specialist in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  She graduated from Creighton University in 2012 and worked in outpatient pediatrics before moving to the NICU in 2017.  While in outpatient therapies, her focus was on cerebral palsy, hand therapy, splinting and orthotics.  Her current passion in the NICU is empowering parents in the sensory, motor and feeding development of their preterm infant.

Alyssa Dahlheimer, OTR/L, CHT is an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist. She has worked at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare since 2005. She is the lead therapist for Gillette’s Hand clinic and Brachial Plexus Clinic. She specializes in patients with brachial plexus injuries, congenital hand differences, Cerebral Palsy, and Upper Extremity injuries.

Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Describe the brachial plexus and clinical presentation of an injury
- Identify clinical assessment strategies for evaluation of a potential injury
- Describe a variety of educational opportunities and treatment strategies for the early management of an injury
- Discuss transition from NICU to outpatient including referrals and helpful information in the clinical handoff of patients with a brachial plexus injury
