Professional Skill Development in Video Research: Progression to Current Technology & Engagement in Occupation

Event Description:
A slide presentation illustrates this occupational therapist's experience using video methods in research, education, and clinical practice. The retrospective narrative traces the author's professional skill development through explorations in art, photography, writing, home movies, videos of evaluations and consultations, and instructional DVDs.  Examples are provided of the professional skill development process, through engagement in occupation that supports participation in a variety of contexts and its relationship with the changes in technology during more than four decades. Occupations are defined as culturally relevant, purposeful activities that give shape, meaning, and value to individuals' experiences through daily routines over the lifespan. Additionally, perceptions and interpretations of those past and present experiences guide the configurations of selected elements into future choices and decisions. Goal-directed tasks that originated as pleasurable and engaging leisure activities can bring personal satisfaction and self-actualization throughout the lifespan. Video production skills were acquired by the author through experiential learning, formal classes and workshops, independent reading, and collaborative projects with universities and business corporations. That approach was not only cost-effective, but also provided the opportunity to learn necessary skills from experienced technicians.
 
The projects included:
1. Collection of data validating test items, comparison of clinical observations, and an interrater reliability study for development of a measure of hand function (EDPA)
2. Coding and analysis of data about hand skills in preschool children in collaboration with a global baby products corporation
3. Collection of data for development of a measure of visual motor function (EDVA)
4. Collection of data for development of a qualitative measure of hand preference (EHPA)
5. Collection of data for development of a observational measure of learning/teaching styles(ELSA).

Speaker Biography:
Mrs. Rhoda P. Erhardt, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA, received her B.S. in occupational therapy from the University of Illinois, and her M.S. in child development and family relations from North Dakota State University. She was trained in pediatric Neuro-Developmental Treatment of cerebral palsy (NDT) in London, England. The former director of the Easter Seal Mobile Therapy Unit in Fargo, North Dakota, she is currently in private practice in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, providing evaluation and consultation services to a variety of health agencies, educational systems, and national corporations, as well as presenting workshops throughout the world.

She has served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, the first licensure board of North Dakota, and was enrolled in the AOTA Roster of Fellows in 1983. She has been a member of the Minnesota Occupational Therapy Association since she moved to Minnesota in 1992.

Her publications include books, chapters, journal articles, assessments, videotapes, CDs, and DVDs on topics such as normal and atypical development of hand function, hand preference, handwriting, vision, visual-perceptual-motor function, eye-hand coordination, and feeding in children with cerebral palsy and learning disabilities.
