Event Description:
This presentation will cover interprofessional care and practices across three different projects/experiences. One will explore how the interprofessional team (including OT) can address the nutrition needs of older adults and how this process can start in with IPE learning activities in higher educational programming. The second will share project activities involving the creation of patient handouts to address chronic health conditions for non-English speaking populations served within an interprofessional student led health clinic. The third will share how occupational therapy, public health, and nutrition and dietetics students collaborated with a community dental team to address oral health needs at the family level and the outcomes of their education activities.

Speaker Biographies:
Stephanie de Sam Lazaro, OTD, OTR/L, Faculty Advisor has a background in family-centered practice in early intervention settings. Her scholarly focus is on expanding the occupational therapy role among the pediatric primary healthcare team to support health and wellness promotion, early screening, and intervention.

Kimberley Persons, DHS, OTR/L, Faculty Advisor has a background in community-based practice. Her scholarly focus in on increasing access to healthcare including rehabilitation for underserved populations.

Teresa Wickboldt, OTD, OTR/L, Faculty Advisor has a background in older adult practice across multiple rehabilitation settings; primarily home health care with additional experience in settings such as acute, inpatient rehabilitation, and transitional care/skilled nursing. Her scholarly focus is on interprofessional educational opportunities in the classroom and the occupational therapist’s role in addressing health and wellness with older adults in community-based settings.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
    •    Identify barriers and facilitators to healthcare access for a Spanish-speaking population 

    •    Articulate strategies to address health literacy needs in a variety of practice settings

    •    Compare student perceptions and attitudes related to interprofessional practice and education (IPE) opportunities across community engaged experiences

    •    Identify the potential role of OT in addressing the nutritional needs of Older Adults 

    •    Identify opportunities for preparing new practitioners to address nutritional needs of Older Adults through IPE opportunities

    •    Describe the role of OT and opportunities for OT to address oral health needs of children and families within the interprofessional oral health care team

    •    Articulate best practices for education of caregivers, children, and colleagues in synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning environments
