Event Description:
This presenter will provide:
Insight into clinicians understanding of the role of mentor for entry-level OTD capstone students, what are their perceived barriers using data collected through needs assessment surveys.
Description of what is an entry-level doctoral capstone experience, capstone project and types of projects, and potential deliverables, additionally detailed description of clinical mentors’ roles and responsibilities in mentoring entry-level OTD capstone project according to ACOTE requirements.
Tips and best practice recommendation applicable to mentoring doctoral capstone students.
The improvement in clinicians’ knowledge and confidence was collected via post-dissemination survey after receiving the resource developed by the presenter.

Handouts of the PowerPoint will be provided to participants.

Speaker Biography:
Dr. Sarika Pandey, OTD, OTR/L, CLT has worked as an occupational therapist for 16+ years in multiple settings including skilled nursing facilities, outpatient, and home health settings and for the last 5 years has been working in acute care settings at Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN. She is a certified lymphedema therapist and actively engages in clinical education and mentoring capstone students. She completed her post professional occupational therapy doctorate with specialization in “Teaching and Learning” and developed resources for clinical OT’s interested in mentoring entry-level OTD capstone projects as part of her capstone. In addition to providing best patient care, she is passionate about contributing to OT education.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will:  
    •    Understand the clinical mentors’ perception, perceived barriers, and potential benefits in mentoring capstone students.

    •    Describe what is a doctoral capstone experience, capstone project and type of project, and potential deliverables. 

    •    Recognize the difference between level II OT student’s fieldwork requirement and capstone project requirement.

    •    Identify the clinical mentors’ roles and responsibilities in mentoring entry-level OTD capstone projects.

    •    Explore and Identify attributes applicable to mentoring doctoral capstone students.


Target Audience: OT and OTA with experience, interested in mentoring entry-level OTD students.

Level of Content:  Intermediate, Advanced (The content is relevant to interested mentors and is applicable to experienced mentors who are potential experts of subject pertinent to capstone project)

AOTA Practice Area: Children & Youth, Health & Wellness, Mental Health, Productive Aging, Rehabilitation & Disability, Work & Industry - This presentation can be applied to all practice areas. The main focus will be on mentoring skills and requirements.
