Course Description:

Why do your patients continue to hurt?  Kimberly introduces pain science literature for OT/OTAs across the specialties of Physical Disability and Mental Health.  We will receive a comprehensive overview of pain classifications of Physical and Psycho-social Pain, the bridge from Acute Pain to Chronic Persistent Pain, peer reviewed literature, clinical experience, assessments, treatments, and common threads that connect Physical Pain and Psycho-social Dysfunction in Physical and Mental Health in Rehabilitation populations.

Speaker Bio:

Kimberly earned her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Indiana University and
Master's degree from the University of Minnesota in Occupational Therapy in 2005. She is a
Certified Hand Therapist, Clinical Specialist in outpatient rehabilitation, and long time
Community Health volunteer dedicated to Health Equity in ethnic minority communities.

She has served as a peer and interdisciplinary clinical educator and facilitator to Occupational
Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Orthopedic Nurses, Physicians, and Students. In addition she has
served as co-facilitator of a Women's cognitive behavioral therapy group and past participants in
the National Alliance on Mental Illness Family to Family support group.

 

Objectives:

1) Identify three of the costliest common pain conditions

2) Describe and define the types of pain

3) Define 1 to 2 co-occuring socio-psychological conditions found in clients with persistent pain
or associated risk factors

4) Identify 1-2 clinical or diagnostic assessments for risk of disability in hand arm patients

5) Identify physical conditions correlated with pain anxiety

6) Describe the relationship between pain and perception

7) Understand the importance of patient education in pain prevention and remediation

8) Differentiate standard, Medical or Rehabilitation treatment with Interdisciplinary
