Course Description: 

Second-year students in the Occupational Therapy Program at St. Scholastica will present a series of topics on mechanism of change in OT interventions. These presentations focus on the mechanism of action that explains why a given intervention should work based on theoretical and scientific-based data. Students will also present information on does the intervention work, based on a search of current evidence in the rehabilitation literature. Four concurrent sessions will be offered in the first half hour and another four in the second half hour for a total of 8 presentations (participants will select two).

6:00 – 6:30 Cognitive life skills training to improve ADL/IADL function in individuals with schizophrenia. Room # 338

6:00 – 6:30 Patient education to reduce falling and fear of falling in older adults.  Room # 334

6:00 – 6:30 Multi-modal sensory stimulation to increase arousal and alertness after traumatic brain injury. Room # 234

6:45 – 7:15 Constraint induced movement therapy to increase upper extremity motor control in children with cerebral palsy. Room # 336

6:45 – 7:15 The use of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to reduce self-injurious behavior in individuals with borderline personality disorder. Room # 338

6:45 – 7:15 Cognitive stimulation therapy to improve cognitive performance and social functioning in older adults with dementia. Room # 334

6:45 – 7:15 Errorless learning to improve occupational performance in adults with memory impairments. Room # 234

Speaker Bio: 

All presentations will be provided by teams of four second-year students in the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy Program at The College of St. Scholastica.

Objectives:

• articulate the concept of mechanism of change in occupational therapy interventions and differentiate it from evidence on treatment effectiveness;
• explain the mechanism of action for selected occupational therapy interventions;
• appreciate the importance of the concept of mechanism of change as a way to explain treatment effects to clients, families, and colleagues;
• describe the volume and quality of evidence on specific occupational therapy interventions.
