Course Description: Participants will learn the basics of LGBTQ+ competency. The beginning part of the training focuses on the differences between sex assigned at birth, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. We will discuss the difference between trans/cisgender as well as the importance of asking people for their pronouns rather than making assumptions. The Voices of Health Survey is an annual survey done by JustUs Health in Minnesota every year to determine health outcomes for LGBTQ+ Minnesotans. We use this data (as well as other data sources) to determine healthcare disparities and to assess the general health status of the community in our state. We will discuss how different aspects of social inequity can lead to healthcare inequity. Participants will then learn about the generational impact of the AIDS epidemic and the current status of HIV in Minnesota. In summary, we will discuss ways to make our own practices more inclusive, less heteronormative, and ways to keep bias out of the work we do.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn the difference between sex, sexual orientation, gender, and gender expression (with a specific focus on trans/cisgender communities and the importance of pronouns).
2. Learn about health disparities specific to the LGBT+ community through analyzing Voices of Health data as well as a specific case study on the generational effects of witnessing the AIDS epidemic
3. Learn ways to create a more inclusive space for the community
