Event Description:
A slide presentation illustrat
es this occupational therapist's experience using video methods in research
, education, and clinical practice. The retrospective narrative traces the
author's professional skill development through explorations in art, photog
raphy, writing, home movies, videos of evaluations and consultations, and i
nstructional DVDs. Examples are provided of the professional skill develop
ment process, through engagement in occupation that supports participation
in a variety of contexts and its relationship with the changes in technolog
y during more than four decades. Occupations are defined as culturally rele
vant, purposeful activities that give shape, meaning, and value to individu
als' experiences through daily routines over the lifespan. Additionally, pe
rceptions and interpretations of those past and present experiences guide t
he configurations of selected elements into future choices and decisions. G
oal-directed tasks that originated as pleasurable and engaging leisure acti
vities can bring personal satisfaction and self-actualization throughout th
e lifespan. Video production skills were acquired by the author through exp
eriential learning, formal classes and workshops, independent reading, and
collaborative projects with universities and business corporations. That ap
proach was not only cost-effective, but also provided the opportunity to le
arn necessary skills from experienced technicians.
The
projects included:
1.
Collection of data validating test items, comparison of clinical observatio
ns, and an interrater reliability study for development of a measure of han
d function (EDPA)
2. Coding and
analysis of data about hand skills in preschool children in collaboration w
ith a global baby products corporation
3. Collection of data for development of a measure of visual motor f
unction (EDVA)
4. Collection of
data for development of a qualitative measure of hand preference (EHPA)
5. Collection of data for developme
nt of a observational measure of learning/teaching styles(ELSA).
