Event Description
This course will include:
• Content: Cover the history of dysphagia coverage in OT and perce
ptions of current practice
• P
resenters will break down the concepts of dysphagia care and explain how al
l OTs can be involved to a certain degree to ensure their care is well-roun
ded by addressing safety with self-feeding
• Presenters will educate on how to advance OT careers by seek
ing more education to cover additional aspects of dysphagia care
• Presenters will show videos of modifie
d barium swallow studies to explain the range of skills dysphagia therapist
s need to employ for this advanced part of the practice

span style="color: #000000;">Speaker Biographies
Cristina Sisnersos completed her undergrad
uate degree in 2016 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mex
ico where she studied Psychology and Studio Art. She later attended Creight
on University in Omaha, Nebraska where she completed her Doctorate of Occup
ational Therapy (OTD) in 2020. While on a clinical rotation during her firs
t year of OT school, she discovered that she has a deep interest in feeding
, eating, and swallowing. She later completed her doctoral capstone experie
nce on "Occupational Therapy's Role in the Graz Model of Tube Weaning", wit
h pediatric populations. As a new grad she worked at an outpatient pediatri
c clinic in Omaha, NE until moving to Rochester, MN for the AOTA Fellowship
in Dysphagia at the Mayo Clinic. She is currently working in a pediatric p
ractice area at Mayo Clinic Rochester.
Tastan Kulmeshkenov completed his undergraduate degree in 2008
at Winona State University where he studies Psychology and Sociology. He c
ompleted his master’s degree in Occupational Therapy in 2010 at the Univers
ity of Minnesota. He has been working at Mayo Clinic Rochester for 13 years
and has been part of the dysphagia practice for 10 years. He completed his
specialty certification in Feeding, Eating and Swallowing in 2018.

OTs can be actively involved in dysphagia care and aspiration prevention in
terventions from this time forward
