Speaker Credentials and Biographies: 

Andrea Erickson, MS, OTR/L, post professional doctoral student has been an occupational therapist for 21 years, working in clinical, school-based, and early intervention practice, first in Arizona and then Minnesota. Andrea was raised overseas and have worked with people from a variety of cultural groups. Over the past several years Andrea has worked with several Somali families and have been concerned with the lack of OT specific resources related to intervention (such as educating parents on various topics) and testing children when parent questionnaires are an essential part of the evaluation process.


Emily Hohenshell, OTR/L Emily Hohenshell is an occupational therapist for Centennial Public Schools. She has been at school-based therapist for three and a half years. Centennial Schools has adapted a social emotional learning curriculum this past year and has been looking for support for the implementation. Emily has spent time researching OTs role in SEL and how to best support the school wide intervention.


Jillian Philipps, MOT, OTR/L has been a pediatric occupational therapist in school and outpatient settings for 9 years.  Her passion for the pediatric population and observation of the growing mental health challenges in students led her to receive a Mindful Teacher Certification and pursue the post-professional OTD program at St. Catherine’s University.

  • Participants will be able to describe what current literature tells us about Somali perspectives on play and disability Identify insights for OT practitioners


Social Emotional Learning: An Evidence-Based Practice Project: Emily Hohenshell, OTR/L

  • Participants will be able to summarize the available research on social emotional learning. 

  • Participants will be able to identify implications and recommendations for practice.

  • Participants will be able to apply current evidence to their own districts or work place.


Evidence-Based Practice Project: School-Based Mental Health Intervention: Jillian Philipps, MOT, OTR/L

  • Participants will be able to describe implications for occupational therapy practice

  • Participants will be able to describe evidence on school-based mental health interventions and discuss themes in the evidence
