Course Description:
This event will include a presentation of a Master’s thesis concerning current practices of twelve non-evidence-based interventions commonly used in OT practice in MN for children with ASD. Key research questions included (1) How do pediatric occupational therapists in Minnesota understand evidence-based practice and utilize evidence-based practice principles in their work? (2) How are the twelve specifically identified interventions in this study being used currently in pediatric occupational therapy practice for children with ASD in Minnesota? and (3) What are the next steps for supporting pediatric occupational therapists in Minnesota in being evidence-based, particularly for working with children with ASD? A discussion of the findings of the project and recommendations for continuing education and resources to better implement evidence-based practice within occupational therapy for children with ASD in MN will be addressed. Speaker Bio: Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will: 1. Demonstrate increased awareness of the use of non-evidenced-based practices within pediatric occupational therapy in Minnesota and their implications2. Articulate methods for finding and utilizing evidence-based information concerning pediatric occupational therapy practice 3. Identify evidence-based interventions that support the occupational participation of children with ASD including CO-OP, TEACCH, and ABA 4.
